Sunil Chhetri to play with Kansas City Wizards

American MLS side Kansas City Wizards and Manchester United played the pre-season friendly on Sunday, July 25 at 5 p.m. CT (Monday, July 26 at 3:30 a.m. IST) at the New Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Indian football star Sunil Chhetri made headlines about his move to Kansas City Wizards in the United States. After Bhaichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri has become the second Indian to play English giants Manchester United and he expects to emulate the strategies that he has been dreaming about.

Though Sunil Chhetri impressed in a few friendlies and practice matches, the Delhi born striker has still not managed to make the cut into the starting eleven in MLS matches. If all goes well for Chhetri, his name will feature in the team’s rosters that will face the English giants. Mr. Robb Heinemen, president of team confirmed the participation of Chhetri as a move to attract more fans and viewers from across the world.

After playing for Dempo the last two seasons, the Kansas City Wizards signed Chhetri earlier in the year. Chhetri was sent in the 68th minute. India international and Kansas City Wizards stiker Sunil Chhetri was quoted saying, “It is a great opportunity for me to play the Manchester United team,” and “I will look forward to an exciting game of football and bring to life some of the strategies I have always dreamt of while watching this team play!”

According to earlier report, “the match will be broadcasted live on Fox Soccer Channel for the people in America. The pre-game show is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. CT (3:00 a.m. IST). The match will also be streamed live on MUTV Online, Manchester United’s subscription video service available at for £4.5/month (approximately 325 INR).”

The Kansas City Wizards won by 2-1 over Manchester United in an international football friendly in Kansas on Sunday. Kei Kamara scored one goal and set up another to give victory to the Kansas City Wizards. The Wizards got lead when Davy Arnaud scored goal in the 11th minute. After defender of Wizards Jimmy Conrad was given a red card for a sliding tackle on Berbatov, United’s Dimitar Berbatov equalized on a penalty kick in the 41st minute.

However, in the 42nd minute, Kamara fired the winner for the 10-man Wizards, heading home a corner kick just under the crossbar. At Arrowhead Stadium, a crowd of 52,342 watched in the first event. United will next face the Major League Soccer All-Stars in Houston on Wednesday.
