Astros select Delino DeShields Jr with the No. 8 pick

Delino DeShields Jr, the son of former Major League second baseman Delino DeShields Sr., has been selected by the Houston Astros team, with the 8th pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. The 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft has been started on 7 June, 2010 at MLB Network Studios in New York City and will be completed on 9 June, 2010.

Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft

First-Year Player Draft formally known as the Rule 4 Draft which is Major League Baseball’s primary mechanism for assigning amateur baseball players, from high schools, colleges, and other amateur baseball clubs, to its teams. The first amateur draft was held in 1965. There were three separate drafts were held each year. The First-Year Player Draft is held mid-season, in June for high school graduates, as well as college seniors who had just finished their seasons and second draft is held in January for high school and college players who graduated in the winter. Last or finale draft is in August, the players who participated in amateur summer leagues can involve in this draft.

Delino DeShields was the eighth player taken overall and considered one of the most athletic players in 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. For the Houston Astros, the eighth overall selection is the highest, since the club chose IF Phil Nevin with the 1st overall selection in the 1992 Draft.

DeShields, a 17-year-old, 5, 9” and 175 pounds, comes out of Woodward Academy in College Park, Georgia. He has the ability to play center field even though Commissioner Bud Selig announced him as a second baseman. He said “I feel like I’ll end up playing second base,” on the MLB Network broadcast. His father played 13 years in the major leagues for the Expos, Dodgers, Cardinals, Orioles and Cubs, playing mostly second base and stole 463 bases over his career.

In the draft, Astros selected right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewiczm, with the 19th pick in the draft. Mike Foltynewicz comes from Mindoka Community High School in Mindoka, Illinois. Mike Kvasnicka, the third baseman of University Minnesota was drafted by the club with their compensation pick at number 33. DeShields is committed to LSU, but the Astros have until Aug. 16, which happens to be his 18th birthday, to sign him.
