The official website of the Free Night of Theater is www.freenightoftheater.net where theaters open doors to new audiences without any cost. Free Night of Theater is a national program which is presented by The City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs. The main purpose of this program is to raise the awareness of and attract new audiences to live theatrical performances.
Free Night has several unique components like other individual theatres and regional service organizations which offers free ticket giveaways or discounted ticket programs. Tickets to a broad range of performances are offered by Free Night for free. Participating theatres are offered tools, suggestions, and training on how best to work with Free Night patrons to encourage them to return, and retention rates and patterns are carefully measured.
To produce the Free Night of Theater program, TCG continues to work closely with APASO (Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations), city and state arts councils, and city and state government agencies as managing partners in 2010. TCG stands for Theatre Communications Group which is the national organization for America’s not-for-profit professional theatres. TCG has helped an ever-expanding number of theatres and theatre practitioners pursue their goals while creating a powerful voice for the field for almost 50 years.
Across the nation, there were just a handful of resident companies spread when TCG was established in 1961. Differing structures and aesthetics developed and a more diverse range of voices emerged as more companies opened. TCG has been the connecting force, a touch point for knowledge and information sharing from the starting. Gatherings and education programs, kept its finger on the industry’s pulse through research studies, advocated for federal policy and free speech, published some of the field’s best writers, given grants for artistry and professional development and helped cultivate generations of artistic and administrative talent have been arranged by TCG.
