American talk radio host Dr. Laura apologized for her offensive word that she had used in Tuesday’s show. On the show, she had a conversation with a black lady, who was complaining about her white husband’s racist friends and their use of the word. Dr. Laura said offensive word 11 times over the course of five minutes.
Dr. Laura Catherine Schlessinger was born on 16 January, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. Currently she resides in Southern California. On Wednesday, she said on her website that “she was wrong in using the word for what she called an attempt to make a philosophical point.”
On Tuesday’s show during the exchange, she said the caller was too sensitive for complaining that her husband’s friends made racist comments about her in their home. She said, “Black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO and listen to a black comic, and all you hear is n****, n*****, n*****. I don’t get it. If anybody without enough melanin says it, it’s a horrible thing. But when black people say it, it’s affectionate. It’s very confusing” then went on to repeat the N-word several times. She also said that, “if the caller did not have a sense of humor about race, she shouldn’t have entered into an interracial marriage“.
Dr. Laura wrote on her blog, “I always tell my listeners when they mess up, they need to follow the four R’s: take responsibility, have true remorse, try to repair it, and don’t repeat it. Yesterday, I messed up. I used the ‘n’ word on-air, and I regretted it as soon as the call was over. While it was in the context of making a point about the unfortunate use of that term by others who deem it acceptable or funny, it is a word that is hateful, hurtful and I should not have used it even to prove a point. After the call, I was terribly upset about it and pulled myself off the air for the rest of the show. Today, at the top of my program, I will apologize to my listeners.”
On the next day show, she opened with an apology. She said “Yesterday, I did the wrong thing,” “I didn’t intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done. I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the “n” word all the way out – more than one time. And that was wrong. I’ll say it again – that was wrong.”
Dr. Laura told that “she was so upset about could not finish the show.”
“I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour,” “I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn’t work. I am very sorry. And it just won’t happen again.”
