Silver Spring MD : ‘Save the Planet Protest’ Gunman killed in Discovery Building

A Save the Planet Protest Gunman, James J. Lee who took three hostages at the Discovery Communications building in Silver Spring was killed by Montgomery County Police on Wednesday afternoon after taking all hostages safely. Lee opposed the Discovery Channel’s environmental programming for years because he wanted that Discovery Communications telecast new program at their channels for the world.

The 43-year-old, James Lee was a radical environmentalist who possessed with the Daniel Quinn novel “My Ishmael” and thought that for control overpopulation’s critical effects, humans need to prevent having babies.

A disturbing program, James Lee published on the website. Lees loved the planet. His main vision was “Save the Planet means decreasing the human population and saving animals.” He showed that the planet does not need humans. is a direct protest aimed specially at the Discovery Channel.

Lee launched a “Save the Planet Essay Contest!“, where he assured about $200,000 commercial real estate proper worth in Hawaii as well as $10,000 in cash for the best TV show idea to save the planet. Lee requested participators to suggest an essay or a package presentation about a TV show that could be developed based on Daniel Quinn’s book, ‘My Ishmael.

During February 2008, before in a protest at the Discovery building, Lee was arrested by police because he produced a web posting for asking people to connect him in a protest against the Discovery Channel because they would not permission his ideas for environmental shows. Then he charged with disorderly conduct and sent in jail for 60 days.

Lee posted, “I have tried to submit television show ideas to the Discovery Channel about saving the planet and they have outright rejected all ideas and won’t even listen. My question is: What will it hurt to broadcast shows about seeking solutions to saving the planet? What would it hurt to at least TRY to find solutions by televising shows asking the public for new ideas on how to live?

According the Washington Post, Lee represented himself in court and he said that he was evaluated by psychiatrists who could not find anything wrong with him. The Discovery Channel was conscious of Lee and his opposition to the channel via saves the planet protests, but they did not take his intimidations seriously.

Near the Discovery Channel building, gunshots were listened by passengers on a bus in Maryland at around 1 p.m.

A Montgomery County Police spokeswoman said to BNO News that a 911 call came in at around 1 p.m. local time and stating that an Asian male armed with a weapon and possibly explosives had entered the lobby of the Discovery Channel building. Then our Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded, along with SWAT. Other spokesperson of Montgomery County Police said that suspect fired at least one round of shots, and was carrying what appeared to be an explosive device. He said, at least one person was taken hostage, and on other side media indicated that as many as 12 people could have been taken hostage.

In the Discovery Channel daycare, one hundred children are safe. At Discovery Channel headquarters, police said during the standoff that tactical officers managed to close to Lee and saw him point a handgun at one of the three hostages, after four hours standoff, finally Lee who expressed a wide range of emotions lead to police shooting and killing.

Lees demands, “Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions.”

J. Thomas Manger, police chief of Maryland’s Montgomery County said, “Law enforcement officials fired at the suspect, James J. Lee, because police “believed the hostages’ lives were in danger.” He added, “One of the explosive devices the gunman had in his possession appeared to go off.”

Manger said, “Most of the 1,900 people who work at the Discovery building were safely evacuated, including all of the children at the day-care centre located there.”

The daily said, a manifesto posted on a website registered to a person named James Lee, who gave a post office box in Canada as his address, lists several demands to the Discovery Channel and saying the station “must broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet“. About airing shows, it lists 11 demands that would promote curbing the planet’s population growth, finding solutions for global warming and dismantling “the dangerous US world economy”. Melissa Shepard, a consultant who works in the building, said she was on the third floor with several other workers when someone announced over a loudspeaker that there was a situation in the lobby and people should stay at their desks.

According to Law enforcement sources, the site was operated by the same person who was inside the building.
