At the Paris auto show, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group and a member of the Audi Brand Group, Spanish automaker SEAT, SA, has going to bring its own attraction the IBE fully-electric sportscar. The same Spanish auto maker SEAT launched its hybrid Leon Ecomotive Twin Drive project, which had been presented at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March.
After one year of hybrid Leon Ecomotive Twin Drive project, SEAT came with a progress report, in the form of an EV concept sports car, the IBE. A full interior is offered by the sporty battery-powered hatchback. The IBE comes with an 18 kW/h Lithium-Ion battery, which is expected to give up to a 130 km range. A new version of the IBE, featuring further-developed design, technology and interior, will be unveiled this weekend at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The electric motor is of 75 kW which pushes up a maximum of 102 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque.
“With the IBE, we are demonstrating that, for SEAT, electric mobility will always be combined with excellent design and outstanding driving fun,” says James Muir, President of SEAT, S.A. “The IBE is in the best SEAT tradition of always offering the boldest and most youthful cars in its class. On top of that, our first electric concept car represents the continuation of our strategy for the future; after the huge success of the highly efficient ECOMOTIVE models, we are now working intensively on electric mobility; and that includes plug-in hybrid drive, as well as an all-electric vehicle.”
Foldable rear seats for that extra luggage space are featured with the 2+2 coupe while a dashboard display keeps the driver updated with vehicle running information. A 0-100 km/h run takes 9.7 seconds and the top speed achieved is around 160 km/h. This model doesn’t include any option of gasoline engine. SEAT Chief Designer Luc Donckerwolke says, “The IBE is like a concentrated gene pool for our next generation of vehicles. It will have a clear impact on all our models.” “And it also represents a promise for the future of the automobile – even with electric drive, design will still be exciting and driving will still be fun; at least, in a SEAT.”
The SEAT IBE is a super-compact 2+2 sports coupe with classic sports car proportions to demonstrate beyond doubt that environmentally responsible does not have to equal dull looks or lackluster performance. At just 3.83 meters in length it undercuts the successful SEAT Ibiza by around 20 centimeters. The SEAT IBE generates zero local emissions and has a package layout optimized for this new technology. The drive motor is situated together with the power electronics at the front of the car. Their compact dimensions facilitate the extremely flat and dynamic contour of the bonnet. The lithium-ion battery is located in the rear.
An enticing perspective on the ongoing development of SEAT design is delivered by The IBE concept car. The pure forms, the precise lines and the exact surfaces depict a consistent and unique design language that clearly sustains the SEAT identity in all its modernity. For connectivity and infotainment, SEAT is also using the IBE to showcase its answer to the demands of the mobile generation. In the Paris show car the driver can use a wireless application to connect his smart phone, such as an iPhone, to the car and conduct an on-line check of its systems, including the battery and a trip computer display.
