5000 years ago in the 28th year of Dwapur Yug, Lord Sri Krishna was born in Mathura at midnight of the Astami tithi in Krishna paksha of Shravan month as per Hindu calendar (August-September) so the Astami is a celebrated as Krishna Jayanti. People observed fast on the day and the fast is broken with the prasad at midnight after the aarti of Lord Krishna.
