Swine flu in Bhubaneswar – 2 Died

Once again all the people are frightened because of swine flu. It spread in and around the Bhubaneswar city which results in death. It was reported that four were found positive for swine flu out of ten samples sent from different hospitals.

Recently, a young Software Engineer became the victim of this dangerous disease and died due to H1N1 at the SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack. Now, the situation is that two person were died one after another from the same family. Manini Manaswini became the latest victim of Swine Flu in Orissa. She died at Kalinga Hospital in Bhubaneswar. Unfortunately, Manini was the daughter of Additional Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Harihar Sethi (55), who also died because of Swine Flu. Manini was working as a lecturer at a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar.

Number of deaths in the Bhubaneswar city increases day-by-day due to Swine Flu. Within a span of 11 days of this month, swine flu had taken seven life in Orissa, six of the deaths occurred in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and the H1N1 virus spreading beyond Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the state government today instructed all district collectors to restrict gatherings. Health and Family Welfare minister, Prasanna Acharya told reporters, “We have asked district collectors to keep a watch on the swine flu situation and restrict gatherings.” He also said, “The health department has decided to keep hospitals ready at the district level to deal with swine flu patients.

In an incident, Bargarh, wife of BJD president died at VSS medical college hospital in Burla due to Swine Flu only. Acharya said the state government shall move the Centre for supplying 50,000 more vaccines to combat swine flu, which has claimed seven lives during the past few days. Over three lakh Tamiflu tablets are already stocked in the state. Schools and educational institutions have been told to avoid the morning assembly as part of the preventive measures, he said, adding that the throat swabs of at least 52 people were tested since July and 20 were positive.

The first victim of Swine Flu is a 56-year-old woman from the Sailashree Vihar area in Bhubaneswar. On July 29, she was admitted to Apollo Hospital with severe cold, chest pain and high fever. Her swab and blood samples later tested positive for A H1N1. The second victim was from the Tamando village near Bhubaneswar. The 50-yearold patient was admitted to the Aditya Care Hospital in Bhubaneswar on July 25 with fever and lungs congestion. He later developed pneumonia and succumbed to H1N1 virus.

Official sources said children below six months and pregnant women should not avail swine flu vaccines as it might affect their health. The five-member technical panel would identify such groups which should not take vaccination. It would also submit daily reports to the state government. The other members of the committee are director, health services; director, public health; and director, medical education and training; and associate professor of community medicine.

The health department’s public relations officer shall ensure everyday that there shall be awareness programmes in electronics and print media including doctors’ views,” a senior officer said, adding, “There shall be awareness programmes aimed at school and college teachers, students and as well as their parents. Different departments shall also be asked to advise their field functionaries for awareness.” Information on swine flu shall also be sent to people through SMS, officials informed.
