Porsche 918 Spyder is the first Hybrid Car with electric plug-in designed by Porsche. At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche 918 Spyder first shown as a concept study in March 2010 and after Porsche’s Supervisory Board gave the green light for development of the Porsche 918 Spyder.
Porsche is the German luxury high performance automobiles manufacturer headquartered in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg. Porsche’s all automobiles line is product and manufactured by its one main subsidiary Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, a German sports car maker.
Michael Macht, President and Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG said that the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid powered by both a petrol engine and an electric motor will be built in limited numbers in Zuffenhausen after it will be developed in Weissach.
On Wednesday 28 July 2010, the company said “it would start developing two-seater, ultra-high-performance, mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid technology, which is expected to get up to 113 miles per gallon in its economical driving mode.”
Porsche has confirmed that its 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar concept will go into production. Michael Macht, Porsche CEO, said “Production of the 918 Spyder in a limited series proves that we are taking the right approach with Porsche Intelligent Performance featuring the combination of supreme performance and efficient drivetrain concepts. We will develop the 918 Spyder in Weissach and assemble it in Zuffenhausen. This is also a very important commitment to Germany as a manufacturing base.”
According to Porsche “the car will effectively replace the Carrera GT that had total unit sales of about 1,280 over four years and retailed at prices north of 400,000 euros. The 918 prototype that requires just three-litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (94.1 mpg imp) and emits only 70 g/km of CO2 per kilometer, can sprint from a standstill to 100 kilometres an hour in less than 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 320 km/h.” By using a 218 horsepower electric motor to drive the front and rear axles, the prototype saved fuel, Porsche will build the Porsche 918 Spyder in its Zuffenhausen plant outside of Stuttgart.
The Porsche 918 Spyder concept is powered by a gasoline V8 engine developing 500 hp and two extra electric motors with 218 bhp (160 kW). It will be available at the price around 500,000 EUR mark and further details about the 918 Spyder will be published soon.
